All about Zippy

In August 2019, we had two dogs. We had to say goodbye to Cosmo as he had cancer and was very ill. The next day we went a walk with our younger dog. Zippy- age 7 and was pleased he seemed ok.

About 10pm that night, Zippy jumped off the sofa, yelped and we thought he’d caught a claw but within 10 minutes we realised it was more serious. We went to the emergency vets who said he had spinal damage. They gave him sedation as he was in a lot of pain. We were advised to take him to an animal hospital the next morning. We spent all night in the floor with Zippy trying to keep him comfortable.

After tests, we were told he had invertebrates disc contusion. We were advised how serious it was and euthanasia was offered.
We decided we have to give him a chance and agreed to an operation.

The operation was successful in as much as it mended the disc but Zippy had neurological damage which meant he couldn’t walk or go to the toilet by himself.

It’s not an easy journey to go through but we had to do our best - so Zippy came home.

We took him to hydrotherapy. physiotherapy and worked with him on a daily basis. We learned how to express him.

He was crated for a month and we could see he was getting depressed as he could not go outside.

That’s when we found Winston’s Wheels. They changed lives - Zippy’s and ours.

He’s had his wheels for 7 years and still loves his walks. He is paraplegic - so what! He goes out for 2 long walks a day, he explores woods, enjoys the beach and is happy.

He’s an old boy now and, because of Winston’s Wheels, living his best life.

I volunteer with Winston's Wheels because without them my boy would not be here.
